IRELAND

In the Republic of Ireland, a 4-year B.Pharm/B.Sc Pharm degree must be completed followed by one year of post-registration training. The one year of post registration training must be undertaken in a pharmacy approved by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and under the supervision of a Tutor Pharmacist who has received further training for this role. Trinity College, Dublin was the only university offering the B.Pharm course in the Irish Republic until recently.

In 2003 two new Schools of Pharmacy were opened. A Pharmacy department was created at University College, Cork on the Southern coast of Ireland as well as another Pharmacy School in the Irish capital, Dublin. (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland)

Anyone who qualified as a pharmacist in a Non-EU/EEA country, regardless of his/her nationality can apply to the PSI (The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, Pharmacy Regulator) to have the qualification recognized in Ireland using the Third Country Qualification Recognition Process.  “Third Country” means all countries other than Ireland and countries which are members of the European Union or part of the European Economic Area.

Third Country Route of Registration

It involves a two part process;

  1. Applicants are required to first apply to the PSI for qualification recognition. This process looks at whether your qualification meets the education, training and qualifications standards necessary to practice in Ireland.  There are four stages involved in the recognition process including exam.

  2. If recognition of your qualification is successful and a certificate is issued by the PSI validating your qualification, you can then apply for registration with the PSI.

Fees-

There are two separate costs applicable to this route of access;

  • Application fee of €1,500 for qualification recognition, and

  • Standard fee of €540 for first time registration.
